Forged and Woven — Chang Hsien-ping Special Exhibition: Contemporary Craft Aesthetics

Exhibition Period|2019/09/26~10/17

Although Chang Hsien-ping utilizes a remarkably vast and diverse array of unique, ever-changing creation techniques, the core aesthetic philosophy behind his life's work rests on three simple principles: maximizing the inherent properties of his media, preserving the natural essence of his materials, and honoring the original meaning of craft—practical utility. To him, "utility" is the foundational meaning of "craft." While modern designs often sacrifice functionality to elevate pure visual appeal, Chang discovered a beautiful truth within time-tested, sturdy traditional utensils: a well-designed object is inherently both practical and beautiful. Upholding this unique philosophy, he returns to a rigorous pursuit of "materiality"—an aspect often overlooked today—firmly believing that the fine quality of a material is the absolute bedrock of an exceptional piece of art. He advocates for creating in perfect harmony with the material's raw nature. Only by sourcing premium raw materials can the distinct "flexibility" of bamboo be pushed to its absolute limits across various sculptural forms, while beautifully revealing its natural smoothness, sleekness, and resilience. His masterful application of foundational techniques and clean, minimalist style represents a thoughtful return to heritage. Concurrently, his freely evolving, organic silhouettes represent a bold innovation of tradition. Ultimately, his portfolio brilliantly manifests a brand-new relevance for heritage crafts framed through a contemporary lens.
