Ji: Cobalt Chronologies — Taiwan Ceramics Society Thematic Exhibition
Exhibition Period|2020/10/27~11/18
Since initiating their partnership in 2016, the National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech) and the Taiwan Ceramics Society have curated a series of thematic exhibitions exploring the dialogic relationship between ceramic technology and aesthetics, fostering campus literacy in design, ethics, and humanistic thinking. Following past curatorial explorations into the artistic expressions of iron and copper 3D transition metal oxides, this year's exhibition shifts its focus to cobalt oxide, marking a significant and sophisticated evolutionary step forward. In industrial engineering, cobalt oxide is heavily utilized for functional electronic ceramics, including magnetic materials, catalysts, and lithium-ion batteries. Simultaneously, its colorimetric spectrum is remarkably unique, spanning brilliant hues of purple, blue, and pink. Throughout art history, the rise and global dissemination of cobalt oxide vividly illustrate the ways in which distinct ceramic cultures have historically influenced, cross-pollinated, and competed with one another.Leveraging precise kiln-firing methodologies to manipulate the reduction and oxidation atmospheres, the participating contemporary artists masterfully match structural forms with unique glaze expressions. From intricate, razor-sharp line work and monumental silhouettes to fluid glaze surfaces, vibrant material textures, delicate color gradients, and subliminal tactile schemas, masters from Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea harness cobalt oxide to interpret the interdisciplinary synthesis of technology and fine art, treating the audience to a magnificent visual feast.Art and technology effectively bridge human connection. Through these distinct academic and practical frameworks, this initiative tightly weaves together Taipei Tech faculty and students, local Yingge artisans, and international exhibiting artists. By anchoring this partnership via the "Yingge $\times$ Taipei Tech Dual-Core Ceramic Empowerment Project," the university deploys cross-institutional, multi-generational, and interdisciplinary strategies. This charts an innovative path for the promotion of Yingge’s cultural heritage while offering students a fresh aesthetic experience of co-learning, co-prospering, and co-sharing alongside technology.
