Awakening Through Clay — Yingge Cultural Rooting & International Artists Joint Exhibition at the Ceramics Museum

Exhibition Period|2022/10/27~11/21

Awakening Through Clay — Yingge Cultural Rooting & International Artists Joint Exhibition at the Ceramics Museum was curated around the core concept of local revitalization through ceramics. The exhibition was jointly organized with the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum and the NTUT USR Hub project “Ceramic Culture Empowerment · Yingge Local Revitalization.” It responded to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly issues concerning sustainable cultural urban-rural development and quality education, while also echoing NTUT’s 111th anniversary vision of “Shared Prosperity Through Sustainability.” Through the promotion of ceramic culture and the transmission of craftsmanship, the exhibition aimed to create a collaborative cultural platform connecting artists, museums, faculty, and students.

Due to its geographical location, raw materials, transportation networks, and historical background, Yingge has developed a uniquely distinctive ceramic industry and artistic identity. Furthermore, through the Yingge Ceramics Museum’s long-term international artist residency program, the area has become a site of vibrant cultural exchange and artistic innovation. This exhibition continued the spirit of the 2022 Taiwan Ceramics Biennale, The Shape of the World — Ceramics as a New Social Momentum, by presenting a parallel satellite exhibition centered on regional ceramic characteristics as creative momentum.

The exhibition brought together 17 artists and studio brands, including 9 Yingge-based ceramic creators deeply rooted in local craft traditions, alongside 8 international resident artists and collection artists associated with the Yingge Ceramics Museum. International works originated from seven countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, featuring diverse forms and culturally distinctive themes. Through the experiences of international artists working in residence, the exhibition reflected the inspiration and nourishment provided by the land of Yingge itself, highlighting Yingge’s identity as both deeply local and internationally connected.

The Chinese character “埴” refers to clay or earth. The exhibition title “埴覺” symbolizes the immediate inspiration artists receive when working directly with clay, while also representing an awakening of local creativity and cultural inheritance. The exhibition hoped to inspire audiences to feel the pulse of Yingge’s local history and culture, recognize the importance of preserving it, and cultivate a sense of social aesthetics rooted in regional sustainability, material expression, and cultural awakening through the lens of university social responsibility.
