The Lingnan Spirit Illumines Yangming: Chen Mei-yin Solo Exhibition

Exhibition Period|2023/11/23~12/04
In late November 2023, Dr. Chen Mei-yin presented her solo exhibition at the Taipei Tech Arts and Culture Center. A physician by profession, she approaches art with an amateur's modesty yet masterfully brings out the definitive hallmarks of the Lingnan School of Painting—characterized by vigorous and fluid brushwork, rich and saturated washes, and immaculate color transparency. The sheer compositional maturity and technical prowess on display reveal that her skills soar far beyond amateur boundaries. Her brave, relentless dedication to both medicine and the brush naturally commands deep respect from all who walk through the gallery. In Autumn Melody (Sunflowers), a branch of sunflowers stretching from the right evokes the quiet poetry of autumn, juxtaposed with the lively energy of nearby sparrows to create a compelling visual balance between stillness and motion—allowing viewers to feel the profound beauty and vitality of the season. Maple Woods and White Torrents captures the awe-inspiring majesty of nature through towering, layered mountain ridges and the cascading momentum of a rushing waterfall. It is often said among artists that painting carp is an immense challenge. However, Fish Playing Among Fallen Blossoms breathes life into its subjects, brilliantly depicting the plump, robust forms and agile swiftness of the carp. In the upper left, Dr. Chen utilizes the signature Lingnan techniques of mogu (boneless/unlined painting) and zhuangfen (powder-collision), rendering the absolute magnificence and delicate grace of peonies vividly upon the paper. In the masterpiece Dawn, the artist’s manipulation of light, shadow, and ink tone creates a mesmerizing, ever-changing landscape. The morning mist billows and diffuses, swirling around endless mountain peaks to capture a rugged, dramatic terrain that is both bold and grand. First Bloom presents a lotus of elegant, pristine purity, free from tangled vines or branches, perfectly embodying the noble posture described by philosopher Zhou Dunyi: "emerging unsullied from the mud." Finally, Joy of the Harvest features golden, heavy ears of rice swaying in the breeze, accompanied by sparrows playing, soaring, and singing in delight. The vibrant life force radiating from this piece fills the viewer's heart with a profound sense of abundance and joy. Concurrently published alongside the exhibition, the art catalog The Paintings of Chen Mei-yin stands as a testament to her dual identity as a doctor and artist. It showcases not only the fruits of her cultivation in the arts but also her resilient, admirable spirit in balancing a demanding career with creative mastery. Visitors leaving the exhibition will undoubtedly feel deeply inspired and enriched by Dr. Chen’s unyielding diligence and passion.
