Perception × Between — TENG Architecture Office 2020: 12-Year Works Exhibition
Exhibition Period|2020/03/04~03/25
The TENG Architecture Office 2020: 12-Year Works Exhibition celebrated twelve years of architectural practice through not only a static exhibition, but also a rich series of lectures and guided visits. Centered around the concept of “Perception,” the exhibition emphasized the importance of bodily senses in both the creation and experience of spatial environments.
Across diverse locations and building typologies, TENG Architecture approaches architecture with habitation as its essential core, carefully arranging and shaping the sensory experiences of users within space. The firm’s design strategies often employ rational architectural methods to pursue emotional and sensory experiences. Through techniques such as fragmenting and shifting building masses, creating interwoven boundaries between solid and void, exploring edges and openings, and utilizing corner spaces, the architecture quietly integrates into its surroundings while simultaneously generating poetic sensory experiences beyond pure rationality.
These design approaches create effects such as bodily movement through space, layered visual imagery, framed views, changing perspectives through openings and遮蔽, and tactile experiences. They also provide users with feelings of shelter, intimacy, relaxation, and ease in daily life. Beyond this, one of TENG’s most important design ideals is establishing a deep connection between people and nature, allowing inhabitants to feel united with the natural world.
The members of the TENG team draw inspiration from their own childhood memories and educational experiences, transforming these influences into architectural works that intentionally seek dialogue with nature. Memories of rural landscapes, small towns, everyday streets, oceans, forests, streams, beaches, traditional old streets, as well as research into Yilan regional architecture and overseas study experiences, all converge within their architectural language. Amid the complexity and multidimensional emergence of contemporary Taiwanese architecture, TENG has consequently developed a uniquely independent stance.
The open exhibition layout, featuring exquisite architectural models accompanied by photographs and explanatory texts, invited viewers into the architectural world of TENG. While the essence of architecture lies in function, it is what architecture offers beyond functionality that truly makes it architecture. By opening one’s senses to experience architecture and momentarily forgetting its form, viewers can perceive the spatial depth that TENG continually strives to achieve.
