Everyday Life — Department of Architecture Continuing Education Program Class of 2018 Exhibition
Exhibition Period|2020/06/07~06/20
This exhibition adopted Everyday Life as its central theme, inspired by the phrase “As the sun rises and the moon ascends, the four seasons exist in harmony” from The History of Song, Volume 139: Treatise on Music. Unlike students in traditional daytime university programs, students in the Continuing Education Program spend their days working before returning to campus at night to continue their studies. Designing architectural works late into the evening under the moonlight became part of their unique “everyday life.”
The design theme for this exhibition focused on Social Housing, with the selected site located in Wanhua, one of Taipei’s oldest districts. Wanhua preserves many historic landmarks such as Longshan Temple and Bopiliao Historic Block, while also containing youthful urban areas like Ximending and the bustling Huaxi Street Night Market. Within this constantly shifting flow of old and new, people search for their own stories and daily experiences. The forty participating students sought to explore the future possibilities of social housing within this culturally rich and historically layered district.
What role should social housing play within Wanhua? How should it connect people, events, time, place, and community? Each student proposed different interpretations and transformed their ideas into architectural models accompanied by explanatory presentation boards for visitors to explore.
Housing forms the setting of everyday life for residents, just as architectural design became an essential daily routine for the students in the Continuing Education Program. Despite balancing work and other responsibilities during the daytime, the students maintained their passion for architecture and their concern for daily life. From their demanding routines and countless late nights, they refined their experiences into thoughtful and carefully crafted works, presenting the成果 of their dedication and perseverance.
