Density Effect — Joint Exhibition of Works by 1st–3rd Year Students of the Department of Architecture

Density Effect was a joint exhibition showcasing the成果 of first- to third-year students from the Department of Architecture at NTUT. The first-year exhibition theme, Cube Exercises, began with a single pure cube and gradually expanded into explorations of binary oppositions, trinity, the four seasons, and the five elements. Through this process, students engaged in their first inquiries into the relationship between solid and void within spatial perception, while also integrating these conceptual questions into the exhibition design itself.
Semi-transparent lightweight mesh fabric was densely installed throughout the exhibition space at a human scale, serving as a medium to blur the boundaries between solidity and emptiness. The material simultaneously retained physical substance and visual transparency, creating an ambiguous spatial quality. As visitors moved through the exhibition, their bodily experience became a form of dialogue exploring the relationship between the real and the intangible. Each work displayed within the exhibition represented an individual student’s possible answer to this spatial investigation.
The students’ works were suspended throughout the exhibition space. After passing through the densely layered mesh areas, visitors entered a larger open zone where all first-year projects were collectively suspended into the shape of a giant cube, directly echoing the exhibition theme. Through the accumulation of individual differences, the exhibition aimed to reveal a collective narrative while still preserving the ability for each work to be appreciated independently.
The overall exhibition design extensively utilized acrylic panels to create layered visual effects. In addition to providing project descriptions, these acrylic elements also guided circulation and adjusted lighting conditions within the exhibition. The suspended display structures not only enhanced the sense of openness and transparency, but also addressed structural concerns while emphasizing the translucent qualities of the acrylic materials.
This exhibition demonstrated how architecture students, as future “spatial professionals,” not only refined their own design作品 but also developed distinctive perspectives on exhibition design and presentation methods. From display arrangements to circulation planning and lighting considerations, the students transformed their learning experiences into practical applications, showcasing creativity, thoughtful design strategies, and a strong sense of spatial experimentation.
