Lanquan Calligraphy Society Exhibition

Exhibition Period|2024/03/04~03/15
Calligraphy has always been able to elegantly present the profound beauty of Chinese characters through endlessly varied forms. In early March, the Lanquan Calligraphy Society Exhibition was held at the NTUT Arts Center. The Lanquan Calligraphy Society was formed by a group of enthusiasts devoted to the art of calligraphy. Beginners in the society often start by copying Wang Xizhi’s Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Gathering and Ouyang Xun’s Jiucheng Palace Liquan Inscription, which inspired the society’s name “Lanquan.” This exhibition featured works from 14 members, showcasing various calligraphic styles including seal script, clerical script, cursive script, running script, regular script, silk manuscript style, Wei stele script, and bronze inscriptions. Among the clerical script works were the elegant and forceful hanging scroll Excerpt from Cao Quan Stele and the striking couplet Scripture of the Yellow Court with its decisive brushwork. Running script works included the solemn and composed Inscription of the Humble Room and the flowing Lan Yin-Ding’s Autumn Poem of a Farmer’s Household. In the cursive script section, Xin Qiji’s Green Jade Table demonstrated dynamic continuity of brushstrokes, while the smaller work Endlessness used fluid characters to reflect on the fleeting nature of time. As for regular script, Jiucheng Palace Liquan Inscription displayed firm and upright structure, conveying Wei Zheng’s honest remonstration to the emperor. The beauty of calligraphy can only truly be appreciated in person. Through years of studying and copying classical masterpieces, the members of the Lanquan Calligraphy Society presented diverse forms of calligraphic beauty, infusing emotion into every stroke and revealing the subtle brilliance of this treasured traditional art.
