Jungle Somniloquy — Chen Wen-hui’s 70th Birthday Gratitude Art Exhibition with Students

Exhibition Period|2025/05/09~05/18

"To journey through the jungle of art, I cannot listen to the whispers of others; I must summon my courage and fly toward the setting sun. The night may hold no moon, and the jungle will remain a jungle. I might have a companion or two by my side, yet I must still pursue this path alone." At its core, painting is about following one's own will. Starting from the act of "freely doodling," it was never a question of whether a drawing looks "realistic" or not. A painting is, above all, an outpouring of emotion, a manifestation of personality, and an unconscious reflection of the subliminal mind. Adding anything forced to it would only be akin to painting legs on a snake. Since art originates from the heart, it must also be interpreted from the heart. If you are afraid to "paint wildly" and lose your sense of freedom, you ought to reflect on what is conditioning your mind and holding you back. Painting with lifelike precision is merely one path; there are thousands of other paths waiting to be walked. As the saying goes, "a path is made by walking it"—but the path of painting is one that must be boldly forged. For those of us who do not paint to make a living, but rather play with the medium, we absolutely must carve out a path that is entirely our own.
