In contemporary cities, architecture is no longer simply a “closed box.” Founded by AUA Association (Society), the Asian Architecture Rookie Awards has chosen “Porous City” as this year’s theme. Rather than viewing “inside and outside,” “individual and society,” or “environment and architecture” as fixed binary oppositions, we understand them as dynamic processes in continuous evolution. Architecture is not merely about physical openings; it is a spatial field that embodies different “states,” flexibly transforming over time in response to changes in the environment and social activities.

Initiated by Dr. Lee Young-il in 2009, the competition aims to move beyond the singular influence of Western architectural thought and reinterpret Asia’s local traditions and aesthetics. This year’s competition will feature two stages of public jury reviews—the preliminary selection and the final round. A Taiwan representative will be selected to compete in the international finals in Singapore, joining outstanding architecture students from more than ten Asian countries for exchange and dialogue.

Through the proposals of a new generation of architects, the exhibition explores diverse possibilities for fostering interactions with the environment, creating intermediary spaces where activities intersect, and connecting with the urban fabric.
