The 4th ADA Awards for Emerging Architects Special Exhibition

Exhibition Period|2018/10/18

The ADA Awards for Emerging Architects has officially announced the seven shortlisted young architects selected for the final round and exhibition. Established in 2012, the ADA Awards stand as the most critical accolade for Taiwan’s new generation of architects. The competition welcomes practitioners of all nationalities, provided they are under the age of 45 and have completed a tangible architectural project within Taiwan. This year’s finalists were determined by a preliminary jury panel spanning Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. Emerging from a pool of nearly one hundred submissions, the seven shortlisted projects happen to be evenly distributed across various regions of Taiwan—including the offshore island of Penghu—offering a true reflection of the current frontiers of contemporary Taiwanese architectural design. A defining characteristic of this year’s finalists is the architects' boldness in rewriting the clients' original briefs and objectives. By doing so, they shattered default, habitual constraints and achieved results far exceeding expectations—even under the grueling conditions of low budgets. For these young practitioners, experimentation is not a superficial display, but an absolute necessity for survival and creation. Alongside this intensifying experimentalism, the jury also noted a rich diversity born from these creative risks. Whether approaching design through the lens of social dynamics, urbanism, microclimates, bodily perception, materials, structures, or spatial organization, these young architects have skillfully transformed complex, interlocking relationships into fresh, everyday living experiences, all while exploring the proactive role an architect can play in society. The ADA Awards for Emerging Architects exhibition and forum will take place this October in Taipei. Renowned architect Kengo Kuma will deliver a keynote address on October 28 and serve on the final jury panel to help select this year's Grand Prize and Special Prize winners. The award ceremony will be presented by Pritzker Prize laureate Rem Koolhaas alongside the jury. Through this biennial accolade, the platform continues its mission to inspire and celebrate the new generation of architectural creation in Taiwan.
