Alumnus Tseng Cheng-Shih Calligraphy and Painting Solo Exhibition

Exhibition Period|2020/01/20~02/24

Although Tseng Cheng-Shih had loved calligraphy and painting since childhood, he lacked the opportunity to study under formal teachers. In 1966, he moved to Taipei to attend Taipei Institute of Technology (now National Taipei University of Technology). After graduation and entering the workforce, academic responsibilities, work, and family obligations prevented him from fully pursuing his artistic aspirations. It was not until after retirement that he was finally able to begin the artistic journey he had long dreamed of throughout his life.

Over the past decade, he studied calligraphy under renowned masters including Tsai Chi-Yen, Chuang Yung-Ku, and Li Chung-Chih. Beginning with regular script and later progressing to cursive, semi-cursive, clerical, and seal scripts, he gradually developed a solid foundation in calligraphy. In painting, he first studied floral painting with the late teacher Chen Li-Fu before later studying landscape painting under Hsueh Ching-Mao, whose influence had the greatest impact on him.

Although oil painting dominates much of the contemporary art world, Tseng Cheng-Shih remains deeply devoted to traditional Chinese painting, particularly its qualities of purity, elegance, subtlety, and refinement. In recent years, he was even admitted to the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at National Kaohsiung Normal University, continuing to embody the spirit of “learning throughout one’s life.” He continues to move forward passionately along the path of art.

This solo exhibition represents the成果 of many years of dedicated study in calligraphy and彩墨 painting, serving as an important milestone in his artistic journey. Looking ahead, Tseng Cheng-Shih hopes to continue exploring the “possible future” of彩墨 painting and calligraphy, aspiring to create contemporary artworks that embody truth, goodness, beauty, and the spirit of the时代.
