Wandering the Realms of Art — Lau Siu-mei Oil Painting Philanthropic Solo Exhibition

Exhibition Period|2020/11/19~12/06

Born in southern Taiwan in 1956, Lau Siu-mei harbored a profound love for painting from a young age, though early environmental constraints offered little opportunity for formal training. While pursuing a career in commerce, she met her French husband, Patrice Delmotte, who had traveled to Taiwan for international trade. For many years after their marriage, even amidst the demands of business, she never once lost her passion for art. Later, Lau was introduced to oil painting under the enlightened mentorship of the renowned artist Chang Zhen-yu, spending years of intense practice to build a rock-solid foundation for her creative journey. Her artistic evolution was further guided by teachers Zhong Qin-yi and Zheng Zhi-de. Through a serendipitous encounter, she met Master Lee Chien-yi; deeply admiring his signature style and meticulous approach to canvas work, she studied under his tutelage, where she remains to this day. Lau is a remarkably energetic artist. For over thirty years, she and her husband—a photographer deeply enamored with Eastern culture—have continuously inspired one another. Leveraging their international trade business, they traveled the globe together, leaving footprints across Europe, the Middle East, and mainland China. Immersed in these diverse foreign cultures and landscapes, she broadened her aesthetic horizons and utilized every spare moment to create outstanding works of art. A decade ago, drawn to the vibrant folklore and rich culture of Bali, the couple established a private estate resort on the island, immersing themselves in a natural, Balinese way of life. Through his camera lens and under her brush, identical themes—ocean vistas, sacred rituals, traditional dances, blossoms in full bloom, and body art—frequently emerge, yet each medium reveals its own distinct, captivating charm. Lau excels at capturing the nostalgic charm of historic town architectures. By blending elements of Impressionist landscapes, she has developed a warm, nostalgic style steeped in Eastern aesthetic sensibilities. She is equally passionate about figure painting, utilizing chiaroscuro light and shadow to create intense, tightly focused emotional currents. Passing through rich and diverse cultural memories with every brushstroke, her work beautifully maps out uniquely exotic and wondrous landscapes.
