The Exhibition of Classic Hand-Drawn Architectural Construction Drawings from Postwar Taiwan is the result of continuous research and attention devoted to senior Taiwanese architects since 2006. In response to the growing disconnect between generations, the exhibition reflects concerns that younger architecture students have gradually overlooked the rigor and refinement involved in the architectural production process. As a result, the true craftsmanship behind detailed construction drawings has slowly faded, leaving contemporary Taiwanese architecture lacking in material richness and handcrafted structural sensitivity.
In contrast, the works of earlier Taiwanese architects such as Wang Da-Hong, Chang Chao-Kang, Chen Ren-He, and Lee Chung-Yao—as well as foreign architects who once worked in Taiwan—still reveal an extraordinary level of precision and delicacy in architectural drawing production. Buildings such as the Luce Memorial Chapel at Tunghai University, Jingliao Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Chapel Building of Kung-Tung Technical Senior High School in Taitung, and Sacred Hearts High School in Bali all demonstrate a deep appreciation for materiality and craftsmanship that was firmly rooted in the minds of architects of earlier generations.
Through this exhibition, the organizers sought to整理 and reinterpret the dedication and efforts of these predecessors, presenting classic hand-drawn construction drawings in exhibition form. By preserving the original purity and spirit of these works, the exhibition also hopes to reawaken the初心 and passion of a new generation of architecture students.
