Born in Changhua in 1948, Du Zhonggao studied in Japan and earned a Master’s degree in Art from the University of Tsukuba, as well as a Doctorate in Literature from National Taiwan Normal University. Skilled in all five major styles of Chinese calligraphy, he has conducted extensive research into the structures and brushwork of oracle bone script, bronze inscriptions, and bamboo and silk manuscripts. He was also awarded the prestigious “Second-Class Order of the Brilliant Star” by the Presidential Office of Taiwan.
Chang Pei-Chun, also born in Changhua in 1970, obtained a Master’s degree in Western Painting from the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at National Taiwan University of Arts in 2004. In 2014, he developed the “Stardust Overlay Technique,” using dots to form lines and lines to form surfaces, conveying the philosophy of the interconnectedness of all things while expressing ideals of openness and inclusivity.
Through this exhibition at the NTUT Arts Center, the two masters presented contrasting yet harmonious artistic worlds: Du Zhonggao’s expressive calligraphy, flowing freely like an endless sea of ink and embodying the spirit of transformation, alongside Chang Pei-Chun’s vibrant “stardust” paintings, where color and movement dissolve the boundaries between self and object, revealing a Zen-like sensibility. The exhibition merged the boundless imagination of Western abstract painting with the profound spiritual aesthetics of Eastern calligraphy, creating a dialogue between seemingly different yet deeply connected artistic traditions.
