Rather Than the Island presents the creative成果 collaboratively developed over four years by the faculty and students of the Department of Cultural Enterprise Development. This metaphorical “island,” jointly constructed by teachers and students, is divided into three major exhibition zones. “The Soil of the Island” focuses on整理 and reconnecting with historical contexts deeply rooted in the land while revitalizing existing traditional culture. “The Corners of the Island” seeks to uncover local特色, using regional stories as foundations for innovative reinterpretation. “The People of the Island” addresses contemporary social issues in Taiwan, responding to human needs and proposing new perspectives relevant to modern society.
Drawing from their own life experiences, students creatively reinterpret traditional culture, local特色, and social issues through a variety of artistic forms including installation art, crafts, performance, design, video, games, and virtual reality, encouraging interaction and dialogue with viewers.
Among the exhibited works, six projects received grants from the National Science and Technology Council Undergraduate Research Program. Topics included the use of classical photographic developing techniques to portray the image of people at the age of twenty across different generations; creative applications of traditional Chinese printing techniques; reinterpretations and extended applications of Taiwan’s traditional sanheyuan courtyard houses; explorations of the cultural significance of K-pop dance cover culture among Taiwanese youth; innovative craft design studies involving mixed materials and cultural impressions; and discussions surrounding diverse female identities and symbolic transformations of the female body into vessel-like artistic forms.
