Lin Xian-zong was born in Suao, Yilan, in 1933, and Lin Rui-zhu was born in Chiayi in 1938. Both displayed a natural affinity and brilliant talent for painting from an early age. After graduating from Luodong High School, a young Lin Xian-zong journeyed to Taipei to study art. Meanwhile, Lin Rui-zhu grew up immersed in a rich artistic household; her father was the national treasure master painter Lin Yu-shan, who, alongside her mother Huang Hui—a gifted poet and artist—nurtured her artistic awakening.
Throughout their careers, the couple studied under seminal Taiwanese masters such as Chang Yi-hsiung, Li Shi-chiao, and Yang San-lang. Through decades of absorbing the painterly styles and techniques of Liao Chi-chun, one can easily glimpse the profound influences of the Japanese art movements, French Impressionism, and Fauvism within their works. Furthermore, their rigorous training in the traditional Japanese academic style at the studios of Chang Yi-hsiung and Li Shi-chiao—covering sketching, figure drawing, still life, and plein air painting—combined with years of traveling outdoors to paint alongside Yang San-lang, forged an ironclad foundation.
This relentless dedication has made them a rare pair in contemporary art, fully capable of mastering realism, abstraction, figurative works, landscapes, and florals alike. Paired with a lifelong habit of extensive reading and engaging in artistic exchanges, their ever-evolving creative philosophies have allowed them to synthesize the brilliance of countless masters into a completely unique, signature style.
Beyond creating art, both painters have been active pillars of the domestic art scene and art education. Since 1959, the couple has participated in an astonishing 138 joint exhibitions, a testament to their vibrant vitality and unyielding creative perseverance. Among Mr. Lin’s numerous accolades, his monumental 1985 masterpiece The Ritual was awarded the Gold Prize at the 9th National Oil Painting Exhibition—a prestigious honor that ignited an even greater passion, elevating his painting career to a whole new realm.
This exhibition presents a total of 83 distinct works by Lin Xian-zong and Lin Rui-zhu. Lin Rui-zhu uses delicate brushwork to express a poetic serenity within her frames, while Lin Xian-zong employs a grand, powerful sweeping style to depict the multifaceted landscapes of the world. As their creations converge in this single space, they mirror the couple themselves—hand in hand, nurturing and illuminating each other's lives.
