2023 The 12th Asia Architecture Rookie Designers Award — Taiwan Representative Selection

Exhibition Period|2023/10/02~10/08

Hosted by our university's Department of Architecture, the final-round entries for The 12th Asia Architecture Rookie Designers Award — Taiwan Representative Selection are currently on display at the Arts and Culture Center. Founded by the AUA Association (Asian Urban Architecture Collective), the "Rookie Designers Award" is a student design competition initiated in Japan in 2009 by Dr. Lee Young-il, a Korean architect residing in Japan. Professor Lee studied architecture in Korea before earning his master’s and doctoral degrees in Japan. He has since been engaged in architectural design and pedagogy in Osaka, expanding his teaching and professional practice to Southeast Asia in recent years. Professor Lee observed that Asian architectural education has long been broadly influenced by Western aesthetic paradigms, deeply impacting the traditional architectural theories, techniques, and cultures of various Asian nations. Recognizing that Asia will inevitably become a crucial arena for architecture in the 21st century, redefining Asian architecture is both an essential and monumental undertaking. As a key step in this initiative, the Rookie Designers Award serves as an immediate catalyst to connect independent educational systems across regions. In 2012, the competition expanded across Asia, with the inaugural regional event hosted in South Korea. From an initial cohort of four participating nations (China, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam), the event has grown significantly. When Taiwan hosted the Asian Grand Finals in 2018, the competition saw 25 contestants from 13 nations and a panel of 10 jurors from 8 countries. The works displayed at the National Taipei Technology University (Taipei Tech) Arts and Culture Center represent the 22 talented architecture students from universities across Taiwan who have advanced to the national finals. Final reviews and critiques will take place on the closing day of the exhibition. These finalists will compete for the coveted Gold Award to represent Taiwan at the Asian Grand Finals, which will be hosted in Nangang, Taiwan, at the end of this year. We look forward to seeing every contestant push their boundaries and deliver spectacular performances!
